The Earth Heroes initiative is a joint effort between Sanctuary and ABN AMRO to honour extraordinary achievements of ordinary people. Each of these Earth Heroes has demonstrated courage, creativity and selfless persistence. They have helped protect the natural legacy of India for current and future generations. In recognizing their remarkable achievements with the 2007 Wildlife Award, we hope to inspire more 'ordinary' people to do a few more extraordinary things for the fragile planet we call home. 
Over the past eight years we have shone a spotlight on a phalanx of Earth Heroes. Our search has taken us to the far corners of India, where we have found quiet, dedicated men and women. Some have worked all their lives in the service of nature, others are just taking their first steps toward green horizons. Each one is fighting the good fight, against all odds. Here are thumbnail sketches of their stories.
Just as healthy forests need diversity, we know it takes diverse strategies, talents and people to defend wild nature. We look for true heroes whose life purpose could serve as an inspiration to the youth of India. From wildlifers to forest employees, researchers and villagers, we cast our net wide to include almost anyone currently involved with nature conservation who had set a high personal standard for others to follow.
