About the Sanctuary-RBS Wildlife Awards 2008

People can make a difference. This simple truth is often ignored amidst the confusion and problems that beset the world today. With the idea of bringing the contributions of India’s wildlife defenders into the public gaze, in 2000, with the support of RBS, Sanctuary Magazine instituted a series of Wildlife Awards. Each year, the awards go out to select individuals in recognition of their efforts to protect India’s vanishing wildlife. The Sanctuary-RBS Wildlife Awards for 2008 are:

Lifetime Service Award

Criteria: An individual whose life has been devoted to the protection of wildlife species or their habitats on the Indian subcontinent.
One Award: Rs. 100,000 (Rupees hundred thousand only) We are in search of a true hero, an Indian whose life's purpose and respect for nature can be held out as an inspiration to the youth of India.

Wildlife Service Award

Criteria: Wildlife conservationists currently working in the field who have displayed extraordinary courage, dedication and determination.
Five Awards: Rs. 25,000 each (Rupees twenty five thousand only) We are in search of inspired wildlifers, forest employees, researchers, villagers, or anyone currently involved in nature conservation in the field who has set personal standards for others to follow.

Sanctuary Green Teacher Award

Criteria: An individual currently working to communicate wildlife and conservation values to students in Indian schools or colleges.
One Award: Rs. 25,000 (Rupees twenty five thousand only)We are in search of an individual with missionary zeal who is setting an example for other teachers to follow. Creativity, leadership qualities and a proven track record of working with young persons in a rural or urban setting is imperative.

Sanctuary Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award

Criteria: Images taken in the wild that best depict Sanctuary's descriptor: "Call of the Wild".
First Prize: Rs. 50,000 (Rupees twenty five thousand only)
Second Prize: Rs. 25,000 (Rupees fifteen thousand only)
Third Prize: Rs. 15,000 (Rupees ten thousand only).

Sanctuary Young Naturalist Awards

Criteria: Individuals between the ages of 16 and 25 on December 31, 2008, who show extraordinary caring and respect for nature.
Three Young Naturalist Awards: Rs. 10,000 each. (Rupees ten thousand only). We are in search of young naturalists or conservationists, for whom the study and defence of nature is the purpose of life, whose actions speak louder than words and who inspire hope for the future.

Wind Under The Wings Award

Criteria: An Indian organization that has supported an individual who has made a difference.
Award: Rs. 25,000 each (Rupees twenty five thousand only)We are in search of an institution that encourages naturalists, conservationists, journalists and/or other professionals to defend nature by making resources available and by providing the intellectual space for people to follow their dream.
